Day 7: Glencoe and Oban
Glencoe
Glencoe was the site of Scotland's most infamous massacre involving the Campbells and MacDonalds. It happened in the aftermath of the Jacobite rebellion when the clans refused to pledge allegiance to the government. We were told to "keep our daggers on the bus." After this stop, we stopped at a ski hill and took a lift up to the first stop for scenic overlook and whiskey tasting. The views were grand, and the whiskey was the best I'd had so far. We had lunch at the lodge--soup and sandwiches compliments of Nigel.
Oban
Our next stop was the scenic coastal town of Oban. Here we did a whiskey tour and taste at the famous Oban Distillery. It was a very interesting tour. This distillery ages their whiskey 14 years! Because the whiskey sits in barrels so long, some of it escapes the cask. This lost portion is referred to as "the angel's share." We were amazed at the patience involved in letting the distilling process take so long. That's a long time to wait for a drink!
We checked into our room. Wow! This is easily our best room so far. It’s got a great bay window that overlooks the water with two comfy sitting chairs. This was a perfect place to relax and take in the views. We were on our own for supper, so we ate at a local fish and chips place. This was the best fish I’ve ever had! I suppose this makes sense since Oban is a fishing community, and they not only have perfected their craft, but the fish is always fresh. To cap off our meal, we stopped at a grocery store and bought some cider and chocolate to take back to our room. The sunset over the water was beautiful, and we enjoyed the views out of our hotel window.
